Our History

The Culpeper Library was organized in 1926 through the efforts of Lucille Nelson Penniman and Mary Williams Tucker. Miss Crimora Waite was appointed the first official librarian and served in that capacity for over 50 years. In 1963 the first library building was constructed and served as home to the Culpeper Town and County Library. In 1996 the library became an agency of the County of Culpeper and plans were made to construct a new library. Our present facility opened to the public on March 25, 1998.

“This library building, completed in 1964 was built entirely from voluntary contributions. The site was a gift from Mrs. Wm. A. Donovan. The building, Colonial architecture in appearance, is modern in every respect and will house more than 20,000 volumes.”
